Catherine Lai was trained in copy editing and proofreading at Ryerson University, where she obtained a Certificate in Publishing from the Chang School of Continuing Education.
She has a variety of background experience in different fields – an asset for any editor! She spent a couple of years working in the trade publishing industry in the Toronto area. Prior to that, she worked in geographic information systems (GIS) for the Ontario and Canadian governments, as well as accounting and bookkeeping for a couple of small-to-medium-sized accounting firms in Ontario. She holds a bachelor’s degree in geography, with a specialization in geomatics, from the University of Waterloo.
Catherine currently works as a freelance editor, proofreader, transcriptionist, and captioner. She works with the world-class editing service Scribendi, serving international clients, as well as with the transcription service Rev.
Coming from a mixed-race background, she is especially happy to edit for ESL writers, believing that everyone should get the chance to succeed in the English-speaking world, regardless of their background. She has proofread for the Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneurs since 2019. She is also a longtime staff member of the fan website MuggleNet.com, where, among other things, she has copy edited since 2016.
