Catherine Lai is a freelance copy editor and proofreader. She trained at Ryerson University (now called Toronto Metropolitan University), where she obtained a Certificate in Publishing from the Chang School of Continuing Education.
She works in part for the elite editing service Scribendi, helping clients around the world perfect their business, academic, and personal documents. She is also an editor for the Static Media family of websites, which features content about entertainment, food, lifestyle, health, and more.
Catherine is a co-author of the book The Unofficial Harry Potter Character Compendium and has fact-checked several other print publications. She was a staff member of the former Harry Potter fansite MuggleNet.com for 12 years, writing hundreds of news articles and copy editing a variety of digital content.
Coming from a mixed-race background, she welcomes editing for ESL writers, believing that everyone should have the opportunity to communicate effectively and succeed in the English-speaking world, regardless of their linguistic background.
Catherine draws on a variety of background knowledge and professional experience in different fields, including book publishing, accounting, and geographic information systems (GIS). She holds a bachelor’s degree in geography, with a specialization in geomatics, from the University of Waterloo.
